Power Place, Inc.
Family Owned & Operated Since 1983

Family owned and operated, Power Place  moves to set themselves ahead of the competition by offering a wide selection, superior service, and competitive prices.  Since 1983, Power Place has strived to provide Morris County with only the best in outdoor power equipment.  Power Place Serves the northern New Jersey Market for John Deere Lawn & Garden, and Commercial Products.  While our main brand focus is John Deere, we offer numerous product offerings from leading companies such as Toro, Stihl, Husqvarna, Red Max, Snapper, Bob-Cat, Little Wonder, Billy Goat, and many more.

Company History

In 1983, after 10 years in the Landscaping and Lawn Maintenance Business, Gus Ottoson opened Power Place in his garage in Flanders, NJ.  At this time, his wanted to start the new business, yet still keep his landscaping business going.  After about a year in the Outdoor Power Equipment business, Gus decided to stop landscaping altogether and focus solely on the retail business.  In 1984, Gus moved the store to Rockaway.  While in Flanders, Power Place sold a few minor brands and Toro.

From 1984-1985, Power Place operated out of the garage in the back of the current Sherwin Williams Paint Store in Rockaway.  At this location, Power Place quickly added Snapper and Bobcat.  Power Place remained small offering parts and service to mostly commercial contractors.  At this time, Gus worked with his Wife Janice and 1 service technician.

From 1985-1995, Power Place operated out of the strip mall adjacent to Wayne Tile and King of Carpets.  In 1989, we added John Deere Residential products to our vast equipment line.  This line would allow us to carry small mowers and lawn tractors.  The business remained here for 10 years.

In 1995, Power Place moved to 344 Route 46, the former Whaleco Oil Building.  The store remained here from 1995-2005.   In 2004, Power Place expanded again, adding 3000 square foot of Shop workspace giving us  1000 more sq ft of showroom space. This allowed us to accommodate our growing John Deere product line.  15 years after first taking the John Deere line, in 2004, We have added the entire John Deere Commercial and Consumer line to our product array. The venture allows us to offer our customers larger John Deere units, such as Lawn and Garden Tractors,  Gator Utility Vehicles, Compact Utility Tractors, and even small backhoes.

Big Changes in 2005.  Power Place acquired Taylor Rental of Rockaway and combined the two businesses at 319 Route 46.   The rental business works well together with outdoor power equipment.  This has allowed Power Place to synergize many functions with Taylor Rental, such as repair and customer service.  With the expansion, Power Place has moved all service and warehousing to our 13,000 square foot facility on Richboyton Road in Dover.

In 2008, Power Place became a John Deere certified Gold Star Dealer, the only dealership in North Jersey to hold this certification.   John Deere's Gold Star program recognizes those dealerships who excel in providing customers with the total John Deere ownership experience. The Gold Star program evaluates dealerships in five functional areas: Sales & Marketing, Customer Support, Operational Management, Retail Environment, Employee Development.  Achieving Gold Star status is not a one-time certification; Gold Star dealers must maintain compliance with all requirements, pass on-site reviews and comprehensive recertification audits.

Today, just as in 1983, the business is run by Gus and Janice Ottoson.  Recently, two of Gus and Janice's children have began working within the family business.  Joshua, now runs Sales and Daily Operations of the store, while Sara handles outside sales and accounting.   Currently, our staff includes 18 members, most with 20-40 years experience in the field of outdoor power equipment. All technicians are factory trained and certified.  We are the experts in the industry and are here to assist you every step of the way in the purchase, maintenance, or service of your outdoor power equipment.
